Venture capitalist and NVIDIA board member Mark Stevens and his wife Mary have donated $200 million to the University of Southern California for research in artificial intelligence. The university’s School of Computing will be renamed the USC Mark and Mary Stevens School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence.
Prior to this gift, the couple gave a total of $92 million to the university, of which Mark Stevens is an alumnus. Several centers at USC are already named in their honor.
“As AI becomes increasingly powerful, used correctly it creates tremendous opportunities to improve lives and solve some of our biggest challenges,” USC President Kim Bong-soo said in a statement Tuesday. “Mark and Mary Stevens’ generosity will allow USC to leverage existing interdisciplinary strengths and capitalize on these new opportunities at a critical turning point in society. As a top destination for AI talent, USC will be able to accelerate our mission to educate future leaders, tackle real-world problems, and advance human values and agency.”
USC’s School of Computing first opened in 2024. The university plans to introduce an artificial intelligence degree program this fall.
