The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently validated the first AI-enabled drug development tool, AI-Based NASH Histology Measurement (AIM-NASH). This cloud-based system, designed for clinical trials, leverages the historical nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH, now known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis or MASH) dataset and scoring system to enable standardized clinical scoring of liver biopsy characteristics.
Adam Meyer, M.D., assistant professor of clinical medicine, gastroenterologist and liver transplant specialist at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, emphasized that AI is already being used in the diagnosis and risk assessment of other liver diseases.
“Clinicians utilize scoring systems such as APRI (AST-to-platelet ratio index) and FIB-4 (fibrosis 4 index). These systems use routine laboratory tests and age to estimate the likelihood of progressive scarring, and many health systems are now automating these scores in electronic medical records (EMRs) to flag high-risk patients early,” he said. “AI is also being applied in image processing to help detect incidental fatty liver in scans performed for other reasons.”
