Nissan to reduce model numbers and expand AI-equipped vehicles

Nissan Motor Co. plans to streamline its global lineup and expand its use of artificial intelligence (AI) as part of a long-term turnaround strategy.

The company will reduce its global model range from 56 to 45 vehicles, retire underperforming vehicles and redirect investment to higher-growth segments.

The company aims to achieve annual sales of 1 million units in both the US and China by fiscal year 2030.

In Japan, the company aims to sell 550,000 units annually during the same period.

This approach forms part of Nissan’s long-term vision, ‘Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life,’ which focuses on a customer-driven strategy built around AI-defined vehicles and widespread electrification.

Nissan plans to incorporate AI into vehicle control and safety systems in its technology roadmap.

This brings together technologies from Nissan AI Drive and Nissan AI Partner to improve mobility and the in-car experience.

The next-generation ProPILOT system, designed with end-to-end autonomous driving capabilities, will be installed on the new Nissan Elgrand, scheduled to go on sale in summer 2026.

Full functionality is expected to be available by the end of 2027.

Electrification remains a key focus of the plan.

The company plans to expand its e-POWER hybrid offering and introduce a wide range of electric powertrain combinations through partnerships, including frame-based vehicle systems, plug-in hybrids, and range extenders.

Nissan will organize its portfolio into four categories: Heartbeat, Core, Growth and Partner, clarifying the role of each model and accelerating its development schedule.

The company is also moving toward an architecture-driven industrial model based on the Nissan product family strategy.

Three core product families account for more than 80% of global sales volume, with model-specific sales volume expected to increase by more than 30%.

Nissan added that its “Re:Nissan” plan remains on track in its final year, improving its cost structure, production capacity and product momentum to support future growth.
