New data shows Anthropic is on the verge of overtaking OpenAI when it comes to corporate spending on AI.
Ramp, a financial automation and corporate card issuer, said half of its customers are now paying for AI products. Of those customers, 30.6% are using Anthropic, an increase of 6.3% from March.
Ramp said the gap between Anthropic and OpenAI, which accounts for 35.2% of customers, has narrowed dramatically.
“At its current pace, Anthropic is on track to surpass OpenAI within the next two months,” a Ramp spokesperson told Business Insider. “Early adopters, including venture capital-backed companies, and key sectors such as software, finance, and professional services are already leading the way.”
Anthropic currently leads OpenAI in three specific areas: Information, Finance & Insurance, and Personal Services. Ramp’s data only provides a snapshot of spending by the company’s customers. However, it is a useful measure of how AI adoption in enterprises changes over time.
Advances in AI are beginning to transform several industries. Leading companies such as Meta, Microsoft, and Visa are encouraging their employees to incorporate this technology into their daily work.
Anthropic’s Claude Code has been a huge hit among software engineers and developers, which is likely one of the main drivers of corporate spending on the startup’s technology. According to benchmarking expert Arena.ai, the company also has a top-performing model. That could influence which AI technology companies choose.
Data from Ramp shows that funding is a key factor in predicting whether a company will adopt AI. Venture capital-backed companies have an 80% adoption rate, while private equity-backed companies have a 64% adoption rate. Companies with neither have an adoption rate of 45%.
Lamp did not provide specific reasons for Anthropic’s rapid rise among companies, but the company received an unexpected boost in February when it challenged a deal with the Pentagon. That same month, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth asked the company to agree to military terms of use for Claude or be placed on the government’s blacklist.
After Anthropic refused, President Donald Trump directed federal agencies to stop using the technology and the Department of Defense designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk. OpenAI stepped in to provide services to the Department of Defense.
In response, some users rallied behind Anthropic. Claude briefly surpassed ChatGPT in the App Store, and major technology companies like Microsoft also showed support.
