BiblioCommons investigates the use of AI in libraries

BiblioCommons says, “As AI adoption accelerates, public libraries are uniquely positioned to lead with an approach based on privacy, transparency, and community accountability. While big tech companies often prioritize scale and growth, libraries continue to operate around public trust. This creates an opportunity to deploy AI in ways that strengthen rather than undermine that relationship.”

The company collaborated with four public libraries to explore “how large-scale language model (LLM) applications can support discovery and engagement. This effort focused on technical feasibility, patron value, responsible AI use, and risk mitigation.” They introduced three use cases for AI. It is a summary of answers to common user questions, findings and advice from readers, and user comments.

“Overall, the findings show that AI can be implemented in a way that aligns with library values. Focused applications offer the strongest short-term value, but more open-ended experiences require further refinement. The differentiator is not the model itself, but the combination of trusted data, community context, and librarian expertise,” BiblioCommons concludes.
