White House social media accounts have been posting some very bizarre AI-generated content in recent months, but a new video continues to baffle people. President Donald Trump’s administration has decided to commemorate the launch of NASA’s historic Artemis II moon mission by comparing it to the escape of a Japanese game developer’s superhero, an Italian plumber.
Is the White House under the illusion that NASA’s 10-day flyby around the moon is as important as this week’s Super Mario Galaxy movie? Any Nintendo fan will tell you that that’s patently ridiculous. Mario’s galactic battle with Bowser Jr. makes a NASA mission look like a walk in the park.
The video posted to X combines a montage of Super Mario heading into space with images of NASA astronauts and the U.S. flag on the moon. It’s not entirely clear whether the White House intended it to celebrate or mock U.S. space exploration, or whether the person running the account simply couldn’t concentrate on work because they wanted to quit work and go to the movie theater.

Even government supporters seem surprised. Some wonder how the White House can put a US space mission on the same level as a Nintendo movie, while others question the choice of a Japanese IP over a more patriotic character (some say Superman? Or Homer Simpson?). Some are placing bets on how long it will take for Nintendo’s lawyers to intervene.
“Are you serious? Is it a combination of Mario Bros. and Launch? What’s the story? Are they laughing in our faces?” one person asks. “The White House intern is so American,” another person replied to the post. “I feel like I’m being ridiculed as an American,” someone else complained.
“So we can mock and mock this waste of tax money, cool,” another wrote.
One person commented, “Both the movie and the game were really great!” That was great. Shouldn’t the White House start posting movie trailers? Over the past week, new things have arrived Supergirl trailer and DreamWorks Forgotten Island trailer.
I can’t believe @NintendoAmerica and @WhiteHouse are doing an official collaboration. Considering this, I no longer feel very good about the Nintendo brand.March 28, 2026
White House social media accounts appear to be trying to lure Nintendo. A few days ago, the X account posted “MAKE AMERICAN FARMING GREAT AGAIN” with an AI-generated Animal Crossing rip-off.
Pokémon Company International has previously criticized the U.S. government’s use of its images and trademarks, including the use of Pikachu in memes and the use of Pokémon images, music and the slogan “Catch ’em All” in a video of an immigration arrest posted by the Homeland Security Department X account.
Nintendo is concerned about the potential damage to its reputation. Some people don’t seem to realize that the White House is making posts without the game developer’s permission, leading some fans to threaten to boycott the company.
