As the agent AI boom accelerates, companies are rolling out features and connections at a dizzying pace. On March 31st, Opera announced new Opera Neon features to help plug AI clients into the browser. The aptly named MCP connector allows AI clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, and OpenClaw to use Opera Neon to perform tasks on your behalf.

What is MCP Connector for Opera Neon?

Opera Neon technically already had agent AI capabilities. The browser has access to four Opera agents: Neon Do, Neon Make, Neon Chat, and ODRA (Opera Deep Research Agent). Each handles specific types of requests. Do uses the browser to perform tasks (like research or shopping), and Make builds something (code, a website, a digital asset).

However, I had to be satisfied with Opera’s AI options, and using another client other than Opera introduced disconnections and increased friction.

With the release of MCP Connector, you can now connect your favorite AI client directly to Opera Neon. For example, you can launch Claude (one of our favorite free chatbots) and ask him to research and create a spreadsheet for the best headphones within your budget. Claude can then leverage Opera Neon to perform these tasks.

The MCP connector uses Model Context Protocol (MCP), a protocol developed proprietaryly by Anthropic. MCP is an open standard that facilitates connections between AI models and other tools and applications.

Monika Kurczyńska, Director of Browser AI R&D at Opera, said: “Last year, we released the Browser Operator as a first step towards agent browsers. We are now exposing these capabilities to external AI clients through MCP, allowing them to work directly inside the browser instead of outside.”

What’s special about MCP connectors?

Less friction, more familiarity

There are two major benefits to choosing an agent:

  • You can use the same AI ecosystem that you use for everything else. If you use Claude all day long, it will be a much better experience to continue using Claude for agent tasks in the browser rather than relying on a different model.
  • There are advantages to using your own browser. Often, when an agent tries to perform a task, it launches another browser session, which can cause issues such as having to log in to a web app or service. With Opera Neon and MCP Connector, the AI ​​of your choice is immediately available if you’re already signed in to services like Google Drive.

“The browser is where the workflow lives, but AI is separate from that,” Kruczynska said. “Opera Neon allows you to connect popular AI clients directly to your agent browser, allowing your clients to work where your users are already working without having to recreate the context.”

According to Opera, the MCP Connector is currently available to all Opera Neon subscribers. The company also plans to offer a simplified version of Opera One and Opera GX browsers in the future.
