Popular venture capitalist Marc Andreessen has hit back at claims that artificial intelligence is causing mass layoffs, calling it a “silver bullet excuse” used by companies to justify layoffs. Andreessen argued that the real reason for the current wave of layoffs in technology and other industries lies elsewhere, specifically rising interest rates and overstaffing during the coronavirus pandemic. In a recent podcast episode on the 20VC platform, Andreessen explained that when interest rates dropped to zero due to COVID-19, businesses lost discipline and overhired as operations became virtual. “Employees have become nothing more than icons on a screen,” he said, noting that most large companies are now significantly overstaffed. He estimates that companies are at least 25% overstaffed, with many companies closer to 50% and even 75%.
Marc Andreessen feels interest rates are the real factor
Tighter monetary policy has forced companies to face ballooning labor costs, Andreessen said. “The whole labor displacement story is 100% wrong. It’s completely wrong. It’s classic zero-sum economics,” he said, rejecting the idea that AI is directly responsible for widespread job losses.“It was a combination of the two: interest rates went to zero because of COVID-19, and then you went virtual and your employees became icons on a screen, and it completely destroyed the discipline of all these companies,” Andreessen added.
Companies using AI as a convenient cover for layoffs
Andreessen believes that companies are using AI as a convenient narrative to explain layoffs, even though technology is not the primary cause. “And now everyone has a silver bullet excuse – AI,” he said, suggesting that companies would prefer to frame layoffs as part of a transformation for the future rather than admit past mismanagement.
