AUSTIN, Texas — A panel discussion at South by Southwest focused on free speech, media influence, and emerging technology.
The conversation brought together media leaders and technologists to consider censorship, the role of major media platforms, and how artificial intelligence can shape the future of public discourse.
Panelists included Armstrong Williams, political analyst, syndicated columnist, and co-owner of the Baltimore Sun, who emphasized the importance of journalists staying informed and participating in conversations happening within the technology industry.
Williams said events like SXSW are a valuable opportunity for media professionals to hear directly from technology leaders and innovators.
“For those of us in print and broadcast media, it’s very important to be well-informed, and it’s very important that we’re celebrating South by Southwest and talking about the issues in places like Austin, Texas,” Williams said. “We are here with the tech giants.”

Austin has become a major hub for technology companies, and the festival has become an important gathering place for discussions about how technology intersects with politics, media, and society.
Williams also spoke about media ownership and responsibility in shaping the public conversation.
“It’s not about understanding the story first, it’s about getting it right,” Williams said.
Panelists also discussed the impact of social media and artificial intelligence on the spread of information, and the importance of transparency and local journalism in rebuilding trust with audiences.
