The Chinese embassy in the US briefly posted an AI-generated video mocking US President Donald Trump and his proposed “Shield of the Americas” initiative, highlighting the growing conflict between China and the US over influence in Latin America.

An 18-second animated clip produced by Xinhua News Agency was posted on the embassy’s X account, but was later deleted. with title “Is it the shield of the Americas or the shackles of the Americas?”the video appeared to criticize Washington’s security plans for the region.

The animation depicts a suit-clad bald eagle, widely interpreted as a symbol of the United States, leading a flock of white pigeons representing Latin American countries. When the eagle presses the red button, it first triggers an atomic explosion, then a large red, white, and blue shield appears to “keep everyone safe.” A moment later, the eagle says, “Don’t worry, sometimes you need a little control over safety,” and the shield turns into a cage to trap the pigeons.

The video was released days after President Trump spoke at the Shield of Americas Summit in Florida. The conference brought together right-wing and center-right leaders from 12 Latin American countries and focused on regional security cooperation.

At the summit, President Trump warned of what he called “hostile foreign influence” in the Western Hemisphere, with particular focus on China’s growing presence in Latin America.

The regime has proposed forming a regional military coalition as part of its strategy to counter external forces. The policy is also consistent with Washington’s broader doctrine aimed at maintaining U.S. primacy in the region, often referred to as the “Trump Consequences” of the Monroe Doctrine.

President Trump has repeatedly accused China of seeking a strategic foothold in the hemisphere, including the claim that China operates the Panama Canal, a claim that is widely disputed.

A Hong Kong-based company previously controlled two major port terminals near the canal, but the Panama High Court ruled last month that the arrangement was illegal, a ruling strongly criticized by the Chinese government.

Despite the ruling, President Trump continued to raise the issue during the summit, saying the United States would not allow foreign powers to take control of strategically important assets in the hemisphere.

However, over the past decade, China has steadily deepened its economic ties across Latin America. The Chinese government is financing infrastructure projects and expanding trade partnerships with several countries in the region.

One example is the Port of Chancay, which opened in 2024 with the support of COSCO Shipping. The project is expected to significantly reduce transit times between South America and Asia.

Trade statistics also show growing ties. According to Chinese customs data, China’s exports to Latin America increased by 9.3% year-on-year from January to November 2025.

Even countries politically aligned with Washington maintain strong economic ties to China. In Argentina, imports from China rose by 57% to more than $16 billion in 2025, even though President Javier Millay is considered one of Trump’s closest allies in the region.
