COAS video in which India admitted to leaking IRIS Dena location information was a deepfake

A false digitally altered video has been shared purporting to show Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Upendra Dwivedi admitting that India had “leaked” the location of the Iranian frigate Iris Dena in the Indian Ocean, which was torpedoed and sunk by a US submarine.

BOOM discovered that the video was digitally altered with an AI-generated voiceover.

On March 4, 2026, a U.S. submarine torpedoed the Iranian Mooj-class frigate Iris Dena, which was carrying 130 sailors, in the Indian Ocean about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Sri Lanka, and the Iranian military announced that the attack killed 104 crew members of the Iranian warship and injured 32 others. Dena is a diplomatic guest of the Indian Navy and was in Visakhapatnam to participate in the 2026 International Ship Review and Exercise Milan.

CLAIM: Video shows COAS admits India leaked IRIS Dena location information to Israel

The video has been shared on X with a caption claiming that General Upendra Dwivedi admitted during the Raisina dialogue that India leaked the location of Iranian ships to Israel, which led to its destruction.

What we found:

BOOM used Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector to analyze audio from viral videos. The tool showed a confidence score of 1/100, indicating that the sampled audio was likely a deepfake.

2) Original interview

BOOM has discovered that the original video is from March 7, 2026, when COAS General Upendra Dwivedi was speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2026. In the original exchange, Mr. Dwivedi spoke on topics such as Pakistan’s Sindoor operation and the future of warfare. No mention of the sinking of the IRIS Dena or India’s role in the incident was found.
