Outpost Bio, a company focused on deciphering complex interactions in human biology, has raised a $3.5 million pre-seed round co-led by Merantix Capital and Seedcamp, with participation from OpenSeed VC, Defined, and several strategic family offices and angel investors.
Human microbiology investigates how microbial communities living in and on surfaces metabolize drugs, process nutrients, and influence health outcomes. Despite being one of the most complex and data-rich areas in biology, it remains difficult for research and development teams to translate this complexity into actionable insights. Although many biological frontier models focus primarily on components encoded in human DNA, biological functions emerge from interactions across multiple systems.
Outpost Bio aims to address this gap by developing an interaction layer frontier model focused on human microbiology. The company’s Lab-in-the-Loop platform combines automated experimentation and machine learning to create a closed feedback loop in which models learn from experimental results and guide subsequent testing.
This approach generates unique human-derived functional data at scale, helping pharmaceutical partners reduce clinical risks, design safer formulations, and strengthen regulatory evidence.
In addition to pharmaceuticals, food and consumer companies can also use this platform to assess how prebiotics, botanicals, and other ingredients impact microbial communities.
This new funding will support further development of Outpost Bio’s experimental and modeling platform, enabling new approaches to the design of medicines, ingredients, and consumer health products.
