Apple is rumored to be working on a feature that will soon allow users to easily use artificial intelligence-powered chatbots like ChatGPT on CarPlay.
This feature allows users to interact with the AI assistant while driving. This way, users don’t have to rely solely on Siri or necessarily look at their iPhone screen.
Bloomberg revealed that Apple is working on plans to make AI apps developed by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others work with CarPlay. This allows users to converse with chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other similar applications through the car’s infotainment system. The use of such tools was previously done by combining an iPhone device with CarPlay.
Apple is said to have set some restrictions. Users cannot replace the Siri button or change the wake word that launches Apple’s Assistant. Instead, drivers must manually open the chatbot app of their choice within CarPlay. Developers may be able to set the app to automatically enter voice mode when you open it, which can help alleviate the issue.
Last month, Apple confirmed that Google Gemini will be included in a future version of Siri, expected to be released later this year. Enabling third-party AI chatbots in CarPlay is another move that reflects a shift toward a more open AI strategy.
Apple hasn’t officially confirmed the feature, and Bloomberg says it could start rolling out in the coming months, although it’s still in the testing phase.
