CSUF University Extension celebrated the graduation of its first students in the Accelerated MS in Applied Computer Science program this winter. The program begins in fall 2024 and is an affordable fast track to a career in the growing field of software design and architecture, with a focus on areas such as databases, algorithms, information security, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and web and mobile application development.
The program welcomes domestic and international students who choose CSUF for an in-depth curriculum that explores various aspects of the field and provides a holistic view of the computer science industry.
Graduate student Vikas Vinugna completed his bachelor’s degree in India and gained experience as a software engineer at Cognizant, an international information technology company. While at Cognizant, I became interested in machine learning and artificial intelligence, which led me to apply to the CSUF AMACS program.
“My goal was to deepen my understanding of the core principles of computer science while expanding my skillset into artificial intelligence and machine learning. I also wanted to strengthen my ability to design robust software systems while learning how to integrate data-driven models, algorithms, and intelligent decision-making into those systems,” said Vinugna.
When asked why he chose CSUF over other universities around the world, he said: “The accelerated structure, combined with applied coursework and project-based learning, made CSUF the ideal environment to bridge my industry experience with advanced computational and analytical concepts.”
For students currently in the program or future students considering applying, Vinugna offered some advice. He said the communal aspect of the cohort program was essential to his success. He recommends seeking feedback from faculty and participating in as many projects as possible to build a strong foundation.
