Employees use AI tools to analyze Amazon layoffs and reveal affected teams

Amazon employees used AI tools to analyze internal conversations and created a list of teams and organizations that could be affected by the layoffs, according to a message seen by Business Insider.

Amazon announced the layoffs Wednesday, announcing it would cut 16,000 employees. The company has not disclosed where it plans to make cuts. The list of employees is generated by AI and appears to be based on internal Slack conversations, so it may contain inaccuracies. Amazon did not respond to requests to verify the listing.

Business Insider has edited the list for length and clarity. The employee used an AI tool called Pippin to create the list. Amazon employees increasingly use this tool to create and review documents.

“I used Pippin to analyze today’s conversation,” the employee wrote in the company’s Slack. “Please note that this information may not be 100% accurate. Everyone, be careful!”

Business Insider independently reviewed internal messages related to Amazon’s job cuts within its AI cloud service Bedrock, cloud data warehouse service Redshift, ProServe consulting team, Prime subscription service, and last-mile delivery experience team.

Wednesday’s round of layoffs marks the latest mass layoffs personnel reduction Since October, when Amazon cut 14,000 roles. Amazon employs more than 1.5 million people worldwide, but the company’s employees make up a relatively small portion of that total, at about 350,000 people.
