ShowCAIS 2023 focuses on using AI to address many social issues
AI is often viewed as a tool of innovation and productivity, but its potential for positive social impact is often underestimated. but, USC Center for AI in Society (CAIS) We are leading the way by demonstrating how AI can be used to address some of the most pressing social issues of our time.
Recently hosted USC CAIS ShowCAIS, a one-day event that brings together over 100 students and faculty from seven different USC schools to permanently present their research using AI. Presentations at the event, held in person for the first time, focused on a variety of projects addressing issues such as equity, healthcare, homelessness, LGBTQ+ marginalization, conservation and disaster response. As a pioneering partnership between the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, USC CAIS has been at the forefront of harnessing AI for social good since her 2016 inception. increase., Long before the recent AI boom.

To make the most of the capabilities of AI technology, Eric Rice Co-Director of USC CAIS, whose research focuses on homeless, says that it is important to bring together individuals working with AI in various fields. “AI is no longer just for computers and scientists,” said Rice, who is a Dworak-Peck professor of social work at USC. “They have contributed greatly to its development, but there are also groups of people from different schools who are delving into this field. And we believe that we can significantly expand our influence and overall impact.”
The event was a huge success and was attended by the Viterbi School of Engineering, the Suzanne Dworak Peck School of Social Work, the Sol Price Public Policy School, the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, the Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Marshall School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. business. It included presentations from her 12 faculty members and her 41 students, including undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students.
“Many of the projects showcased at ShowCAIS highlight the creative and innovative ways AI can be used to make a positive impact, especially in addressing social issues. It’s important in understanding the different ways that tools can connect to the real world in a positive way.” Bistra Dilkina Co-Director of USC CAIS and USC Viterbi Associate Professor of Computer Science and Industrial and Systems Engineering. At the symposium, Dilkina presented her latest research on the use of AI. conservation activities.

Dr. Nathan Justin Led by Computer Science Student at USC Viterbi School of Engineering AI fairness research In applications across multiple disciplines. “This showcase event is an opportunity for my research and social scientists who, as engineers, to use my technology in their own applications or come up with new ideas about how to use the theory in their own work. It’s given me a unique opportunity to share,” he explained. “I love hearing from the social science side that there might be engineering and AI solutions to the problems they face.” He and Ph.D. A student studying social work at his Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work at USC played a key role in organizing the symposium, along with Dilkina and Rice.
