SEOUL, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) – The Ministry of Defense will this week create a new position of vice minister in charge of artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen the building of a smart military, officials said.
The reform plan, approved by the Cabinet earlier in the day, aims to transform the military into one that employs cutting-edge technology, the ministry said.
Under the plan, the department would eliminate the Office of Military Resources Management and create a new deputy minister in charge of all AI-related functions, including logistics, intelligence, and military assets.
According to ministry officials, the new vice minister will be Won Jong-dae, director of the Military Resources Management Office.
The Deputy Minister will oversee four bureaus related to AI work, consisting of approximately 220 people. The position of deputy defense minister will be restored for the first time since 2006.
The organizational changes are scheduled to take effect on Friday.
