Over the past two years, the response coming out of Silicon Valley has been a resounding affirmation of “Yes, that's right,” perhaps sooner than expected. The tech industry seemed to embrace AI with great fanfare, awarding it the title of Employee of the Year.
However, it makes sense to pause for a moment. Let's dig deeper. Not all that glitters is gold. Sometimes the truth is found in a clear and obvious reflection.
Enterprise software giant Salesforce once epitomized the belief that AI would replace human labor. But the story changes dramatically, revealing a far more subtle and disconcerting reality.
In the gap between high expectations and tangible results lies an important lesson for employees, executives, and policy makers alike.
Historically, there has been a tug-of-war between optimists who herald the arrival of AI as a liberator from menial tasks and those who champion human ingenuity. However, recent observations suggest that the anticipated AI bubble may be on the brink of deflation.
When you lose confidence in holding the helm
A year ago, organizations' faith in large-scale language models (LLMs) was almost unshakable. Nostalgia now pervades memories of a time when drafting an email required rigorous intellectual work. Nowadays, you simply need a well-crafted prompt, and lo and behold, AI generates the clearest response.
Beyond just email, AI is excelling at meeting summarization, coding, and presentation design at incredible speeds. But beneath this shine lies a more complex and ambiguous reality.
Companies that resorted to layoffs in favor of AI are now expressing regret. A great example is Salesforce, where Sanjna Parulekar, senior vice president of product marketing, noted that trust within the company around these models has plummeted.
The once-solid industry consensus that AI is a universal cognitive ally is beginning to crumble under the pressure of real-world applications.
This shift is notable, considering Salesforce is no longer a minor player dabbling at the edge. It serves as the backbone of customer relationships across thousands of global companies. Publicly declaring our AI goals resonated across the industry.
Retrenchments that sparked opposition
The ensuing anxiety arose not from technical limitations but from grim statistics. Salesforce has reduced its workforce from about 9,000 to 5,000 employees, cutting nearly 4,000 positions.
CEO Marc Benioff said the decline is a direct result of AI agents taking over roles previously held by humans. The declaration quickly spread, raising concerns that once-secure white-collar jobs were now being targeted by AI.
For many employees, the implications were unmistakable. AI does not need to achieve perfection to cause disruption. We simply needed a threshold of appropriateness.
When “smart” can no longer be trusted
As AI systems have been widely deployed, fundamental flaws have begun to surface. Muralidhar Krishnaprasad, Agentforce's chief technology officer, acknowledged that there are significant limitations. When faced with more than eight directives, large language models often break down and omit important tasks.
While such unpredictability is acceptable in consumer applications, it is disastrous in enterprise environments where compliance and accuracy are non-negotiable.
Its meaning is not abstract. Consider Vivint, a home security company that serves 2.5 million customers. Vivint discovered that the AI tasked with sending out satisfaction surveys had mysteriously stopped working.
To restore trust, Salesforce resorted to implementing deterministic triggers, rule-based automation that consistently follows its instructions.
Additionally, executives reported phenomena such as “AI drift,” in which agents become sidetracked by unrelated inquiries during customer interactions and deviate from their original purpose.
These glitches raise serious questions about AI's trustworthiness and ability to assume responsibility.
The quiet resurgence of conventional technology
Salesforce's recent strategic shift is particularly instructive. The company is now advocating for “deterministic” automation, a mechanism that may lack the glamor and conversational subtlety of AI, but offers far greater reliability. Fundamentally, Salesforce is rediscovering the benefits of traditionally unobtrusive technology: software that runs consistently and without failure.
This shift signals a temporary retreat from advancing AI-centric agendas. Even Marc Benioff, once an AI ardent supporter, has recently emphasized that a robust data foundation, not AI models, is Salesforce's strategic pinnacle. The irony is obvious. At the very moment AI is being cited as a harbinger of job losses, companies implementing it are taking a more cautious stance.
Will AI usher in unemployment or illuminate organizational decisions?
Herein lies the complex and revealing nature of Salesforce's story. Jobs have undoubtedly been lost due to attrition, but the technology that replaces these roles is far from the autonomous, perfect being that many envision. In reality, current AI systems remain fragile and require oversight and human intervention to operate effectively.
What disappeared with Salesforce was not the nature of work itself, but the specific arrangement of labor. As AI has assumed responsibility for a large number of repetitive tasks, humans have been replaced from roles defined by scalability rather than discernment. But when nuance and accountability became paramount, AI struggled to deliver.
The sobering reality is that organizations may not be replacing human workers for machine superiority, but rather to maximize efficiency and minimize error tolerance. For certain abilities, it may be enough to achieve “about the right thing.” In other regions, by contrast, such an approach can have devastating consequences.
Fundamental research that we should propose
Will AI replace your employment? The Salesforce case requires a more nuanced question. In other words, what is the basic nature of your job?
Tasks characterized by repetition, loose rules, and room for error are certainly vulnerable. Conversely, positions that demand context, prioritization, and accountability remain distinctly human.


For now, AI is not a true worker. It acts as a magnifier of efficiency, error and corporate value. If mismanaged, it displaces human roles and compromises the system. When applied wisely, it brings to light the judgments we take for granted.
Salesforce's cautious withdrawal should not be interpreted as an indictment against AI itself, but rather as a valuable wake-up call.
The trajectory of work will depend not only on the pace of machine evolution, but also on corporate leaders' clear recognition of the limits of these technologies.
This understanding may perhaps be the most encouraging lesson in this rapidly evolving situation.
