Database provider Couchbase has announced a comprehensive suite of model hosting and data processing capabilities for building, deploying, and managing agent AI applications.

The new Couchbase AI service, now generally available, helps eliminate the complexity and fragmentation in the IT stack that has hindered agent application development and moving from prototype to production by bringing data and models together on one platform, Rahul Pradhan, Couchbase vice president of products, said in an interview. Pradhan said companies and organizations that use the Couchbase database to manage operational data are experimenting with generative AI and AI agents. But these efforts often resulted in proof-of-concept projects feeling “piecemeal,” Pradhan said, because the IT stack included structured and unstructured data, vector processing capabilities, publicly hosted large-scale language models, generative AI tools, open AI APIs and other disparate components all held together by “custom glue code.”

According to Pradhan, customers were reluctant to deploy such systems in production due to clumsy handling and concerns about data governance and security.

Built into the Couchbase database, Couchbase AI Services provides an integrated platform that combines secure model hosting with data processing for structured and unstructured data, bringing models closer to where the data lives, Pradhan said.

Key features of AI services

A key component of AI Services is integration with Nvidia AI Enterprise, including support for Nvidia NIM microservices and Nvidia Nemotron models. The platform features automatic creation, storage, and retrieval of vectors. Unified agent catalog for governance and traceability. The company says intelligent agent memory enables context-aware interactions across sessions.

Built-in AI functions enable SQL++-based analysis directly within applications, and Couchbase says this capability streamlines development while maintaining security and performance at scale. AI Services' governance and validation capabilities also enable developers to build guardrails around AI agent interactions and validate agent actions against data governance and business rules before execution.

As a result, the Couchbase database becomes the “memory and context layer” for Ai applications and agents, Pradhan said.

According to the company, the new AI services help eliminate the complexity of data managed on-premises or in cloud systems, reduce data access latency, and speed up LLM engagements.

Pradhan said solution providers can leverage the new AI services to develop custom applications for their customers and provide services around those applications, while ISV partners can use them to build commercial applications on top of the Couchbase database.
