The Hyderabad Police has registered a case against an AI-generated fake video falsely depicting Congress leader and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi.
The complaint was filed by Mr. Mohammed Irfan Khan, Managing Member of AIMIM Social Media Team. It is alleged that certain social media accounts posted fabricated videos with the aim of spreading misinformation, hurting religious sentiments and creating disharmony.
A suit has been registered on the basis of the complaint, which falls under the relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2008 and the People's Republic of India Act (BNS).
Separately, a private member's bill was introduced in parliament aimed at having a clear legal framework for regulating deepfakes.
The bill, titled Deepfakes Regulation, passed by Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde in the Lok Sabha on Friday, aims to protect the public by making it mandatory to obtain the prior consent of individuals depicted in deepfake content. The bill also enumerates certain penalties for criminals who maliciously create or distribute deepfake content.
