Check for cheating with AI-powered cameras in exam centers

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Board of Higher and Secondary Education (CHSE) has decided to emulate the Odisha Board of Secondary Education (BSE) and bring examination halls and sensitive exam centers under artificial intelligence (AI) surveillance. The council plans to install AI-powered CCTV cameras at all examination halls where the annual Plus II exam question papers are kept. Additionally, the Plus II practical exam will be livestreamed. CHSE Examination Controller Prasanta Kumar Parida said on Wednesday that question papers will be kept at 210 exam centers across the state before they are sent to exam centers this year. Until last year, the exam hub was under CCTV surveillance and the CHSE exam management hub maintained all records. Surveillance cameras did not provide immediate alerts if something unusual occurred. For that, I needed to check the footage. However, he said AI-powered CCTV cameras will provide real-time updates on the exam hub, which will be monitored by the CHSE exam management hub. CHSE’s review committee on Wednesday approved the proposal for AI-powered CCTV. CHSE will arrange for live streaming of the Plus II practical exam starting in January next year. The move follows complaints from various senior secondary schools (HSS) regarding cheating during practical examinations. Parida had previously said that all theory exams will be live-streamed on the exam management hub. Therefore, the same has been decided for practical exams as well, he added. If required, CHSE will provide live streaming links to schools, mass education departments, and district administrations. The management hub has seven CHSE personnel overseeing the process. Earlier this year, BSE, which conducts entrance exams, installed AI-powered cameras in question paper storage rooms and sensitive exam centers to monitor cheating.
