Guwahati: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police on Friday arrested three Congress party leaders for allegedly circulating an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated video featuring Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

A video edited to resemble the quiz show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ in which the Chief Minister of Assam is said to be the most corrupt chief minister in independent India has gone viral on social media. The Prime Minister’s Office (CMO) later clarified that the video was fake and artificially generated.

However, CID Special Director General of Police (DGP) Munna Prasad Gupta said the Congress leaders were granted bail after appearing in the Kamrup District Court on Friday.

Majuli district council social media and IT wing chairman Jibeswar Gam (27), Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) spokesperson Upen Raj Nath and Rupohi MP Shahidul Islam (29) were arrested separately from Majuli and other districts between Wednesday and Thursday.

Senior Congress spokesperson Raju Sahu was also summoned and questioned, but was not arrested, the CID said.

The CID registered a case following a post on social media by the Prime Minister’s Office that read, “Warning! A fake and fabricated video is being circulated by some netizens with an aim to defame CM Dr @himantabiswa. This allegation is completely baseless. We urge everyone to be cautious and avoid sharing unverified content. Those who create or disseminate such false information will face legal action.”

Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera, who visited here on Friday, claimed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is the most corrupt chief minister in the history of independent India.

At a press conference, Khera claimed that Sarma knows that the people of Assam will lose to Sarma in the upcoming assembly polls.

“Hence, he has enlisted the help of the police and the Election Commission, which has directed the implementation of a special revision of the electoral roll in the state, to arrest those who oppose him,” he claimed.

“Special amendments have been implemented in Assam to attract voters from outside the state and their names are included in the voter list,” Khera claimed.

He reiterated that the people of Assam want Sarma to be defeated in the polls and he knows this very well.
