Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for a global agreement to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence, urging that critical technologies be human-centric rather than financial-centric.

Speaking at the third session of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, PM Modi also said that the application of technology should be “global” rather than “national” and based on “open source” rather than “proprietary models”.

Prime Minister Modi said this vision is integrated into India’s technology ecosystem and has brought significant benefits in areas such as space applications, AI and digital payments, where India is a world leader.

He was speaking at the third session of the G20 Summit on the theme “A fair and just future for all – critical minerals, decent jobs and artificial intelligence.”

“We all must ensure that AI is used for the benefit of the world and that its misuse is prevented. This requires creating a global agreement on AI based on certain core principles, including effective human oversight, safety by design, transparency, and strict limits on the use of AI in deepfakes, criminal and terrorist activities,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister said AI systems that impact human life, safety and public trust must be accountable and auditable. “And most importantly, while AI should enhance human capabilities, the ultimate responsibility for decision-making will always remain with humans,” he added. PM Modi said that in this age of AI, the approach needs to rapidly shift from ‘today’s jobs’ to ‘tomorrow’s capabilities’.

“Unlocking talent mobility is essential for rapid innovation. We made progress on this topic at the G20 in Delhi. We look forward to the G20 developing a global framework for talent mobility in the coming years,” PM Modi said.
