Google in initial negotiations to deepen investment in Anthropic

Business Insider has learned that Google is in early talks to deepen its investment in Anthropic.

A new round of funding could value Anthropic at more than $350 billion, one person said. A potential new deal is still being negotiated and is in flux, but it could also take the form of a strategic investment that would see Google provide additional services. cloud computing services The deal could move to Antropic, convertible notes or a priced financing round early next year, sources said.

It’s unclear how much Google will invest in this round or whether there will be any additional investors in this round.

Anthropic and Google declined to comment.

Google invested more than $3 billion in Anthropic, taking a 14% stake in the company, the New York Times cited a March legal filing. In September, Anthropic raised $13 billion at a $138 billion valuation, while OpenAI reached a $500 billion valuation last month through a secondary sale that allowed employees to sell stock.

The talks come as Anthropic and its main rival, OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, are in a multitrillion-dollar race to monopolize the models that power AI. At the same time, big tech companies are on side, with Amazon and Google backing Anthropic, and Microsoft and Nvidia investing billions in OpenAI.

Amazon’s Project Rainer, one of the world’s largest AI computing clusters with nearly half a million Trainium2 chips, recently came online to power Claude.

Anthropic also uses NVIDIA GPUs to train and enrich its models.
