Watch: Maharashtra School Deploys AI Machines to Assess Food Quality for Tribal Students

A machine that checks the quality of meals provided to students

A unique artificial intelligence-based machine was installed at the Tossa Ashram School in Ettapalli, Maharashtra to improve the nutritional levels of the children of the Gatchirori tribe. According to news agency ANI, the initiative is being carried out by the administration under Project Bhamragad, as part of which he will have eight public schools.

Most notably, when the machine takes a picture of a student holding their plate, within seconds it identifies whether the food is of good quality or not without human intervention.

“When I attended this all-girls ashram school, I felt undernourished. A preliminary BMI analysis showed that 61 of the 222 girls were malnourished. Here we serve three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. The portions are generous and the menu is strictly adhered to, so we wanted to find out why,” says Etapalli. Shubham Gupta, assistant collector and project director of the Integrated Tribal Development Project, told ANI.

He also said he got in touch with an NGO that introduced him to a startup that built a machine that could assess the quality of the food being served.

“We got in touch with an NGO, which made us even more connected with the startup. We put this machine here that they designed… Through this machine, we were able to increase not only the quantity of food, but also the quality of it. The data collected here can be accessed by the principal and I. So far we have set it up in one of eight ashram schools,” he said.

Gupta said the administration was getting good results from the project, and the quality of food had improved.

“The results are very positive. We installed it in September 2022. Since then, the food quality has improved and so has the children’s BMI,” he added.
