Peoria (25News Now) – Atlanta-based Andrew Velcoff has been an entertainment lawyer since 1986. He negotiates a film deal with great talent and is deeply involved in major films.
Verkov was in Peoria on Friday and spoke to a Bradley University student about his career in a lecture entitled “From Broadcast to AI.” Velcoff said artificial intelligence is coming to entertainment, no matter how you feel about it.
He believes it can bring affordable new tools that will help film producers, but it may have similar drawbacks.
“Some jobs are lost, some jobs are acquired, and hopefully at the end of the day, we will be able to adapt and people with great talent will be able to find their place in the field,” Velcoff said.
He believes the law has not kept up to this technology, and believes there are still new regulations needed for copyright and ways to use the technology.
25News asked about the AI character Tilly Norwood. This sparked controversy after reports that it was being considered in film and television projects.
“It's true, the law doesn't prohibit anyone from creating a character. Now, the only question is, did you take that character from someone else? Did I study your face to create that face? I think that's a problem,” Velcoff said.
The character has been criticized by SAG-AFTRA, a screen actors gang representing 25News reporters, producers, anchors and meteorologists. Union President Sean Assin claims that the characters were actually generated using stolen work.
“She said it's synthetic creations that we've acquired from grumpy data. Data that comes from our performers,” Astin said.
Eline van der Velden, the person behind the AI company that created Tilly Norwood, posted on social media that AI is a new tool that filmmakers can use alongside other tools such as animation, puppet shows and computer-generated images (CGI).
“I hope we can welcome AI as part of the wider artists. It's another way to express ourselves with theatres, films, paintings, music and countless others,” writes van der Belden.
