The creator of AI actress Tilly Norwood responded to critics following a fierce backlash, telling social media users that “she's not a human alternative.”
Eline Van Der Velden, founder of the Netherlands AI Outfit Particle 6 Productions, has announced the launch of Xicoia, the world's first artificial intelligence talent studio, at the Zurich Film Festival. She has now responded via Instagram in a statement shared with Norwood's account. It comes after fans and celebrities of the film responded with anger to the news that the studio was trying to get a computer-generated representative of the actress.
“To those who expressed their anger at the creation of my AI character, Tilly Norwood, she is not a human successor, she is a creative work, a work of art,” van der Belden said on Sunday. “Like many forms of art before her, she induces conversations, and in itself demonstrates the power of creativity.”
“I think of AI as a new tool, a new paintbrush, not as a replacement for people,” she continued. “Just as animation, puppets, or CGI opened up fresh possibilities without robbing live performances, AI offers another way to imagine and build stories. I am an actor and certainly not an AI character, and I cannot take away the craft or joy of human performances.
Van Der Werden, who wants to announce Norwood's agency in the coming months, said he believes that AI characters should “be judged as part of their genre in their merits, rather than directly comparing them to human actors.”
Over the weekend, many actors responded to news that the agency was circling Norwood. The AI threat has long been ghost industrial creativity, with regulations around craft being made into a link pin clause through the 2023 Sag AFTRA strike. The prominent use of AI in film and television includes the removal of certain actors or the generation of complex visual effects, but includes fear about the possibility that AI can replace actors.

Elsewhere, Lucas Gage enjoyed himself in Norwood. “She was a nightmare to work together!!!” the actor wrote. Toni Colette simply posts a string of screaming emojis, MatildaMara Wilson said on Instagram: “I was embarrassed by these people. They stole the faces of hundreds of young women to make this 'actress'.” They are not creators.
