The US tech giant has pledged to invest tens of billions of pounds worth of investment in the UK, and Nvidia Jensen Huang predicts the country will become an “AI superpower.”
The largest single investment comes from Microsoft, which announced a $30 billion (£220 billion) spending package.
This is part of a £31 billion contract called “Tech Prouperity Deal” between the UK government and several US tech giants as part of a second state visit to the UK.
“This is the week when the UK declared itself to be an AI superpower,” Huang told BBC News.
He said the UK has excellent expertise and research facilities in AI, but added, “What's missing is AI infrastructure,” and “we're here to build it.”
AI relies on large banks of servers to run on computer chips like Nvidia created.
Nvidia has partnered with UK infrastructure company NSCALE to build such a data center in the UK, and Huang said, “We hope to help build AI infrastructure companies in the UK and expand it globally.”
Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said he hopes to invest AI to drive growth and productivity in the UK.
“It could happen faster, so our hope is probably five years, not 10 years,” he told the BBC.
“Whenever everyone gets excited about AI, I want to see it in the growth of economic growth and GDP at the end.”
Under the agreement, Google, Nvidia and others will invest in UK infrastructure, including data centres, and create new supercomputers with Essex.
Prime Minister Kiel said the deal would create a very skilled job that “put more money into people's pockets and ensures that this partnership will benefit every corner of the UK.”
Nadella compared the economic benefits of AI meteor rises with the effects of personal computers when it became commonplace in the workplace around ten years after first starting scaling in the 1990s.
However, there is also an increasing number of tweets that AI is a very lucrative bubble that is about to burst.
Nadella acknowledged that “all technology is about booms, busts and foam,” and warned that AI should not “become “overdead or underestimated.”
He acknowledged that its energy consumption remains “very high,” but argued that potential benefits, particularly in the areas of healthcare, public services and business productivity, are valuable.
Meanwhile, when asked about the large energy resources needed to power AI, Huang said solar power would contribute, and he hoped in the short term “not leaving the grid and owing people to the grid.”
He added that the AI itself will design better gas turbines, solar panels, wind turbines and fusion energy, producing more cost-effective and sustainable energy.
Campaign group Foxglove warns that the UK could “put bills for the enormous amount of electricity the giant needs.”
The supercomputer to be built in Larton, Essex was already announced by the government in January, but Microsoft is currently taking part in the project.
Big Technology is coming to town
Nadella was only talking to BBC News as Donald Trump arrived in the UK on a three-day state visit.
The technological prosperity trade between the two countries is seeking to strengthen relations between AI, quantum computing and nuclear power.
What have been asked about if the UK agreed to give in return?
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall told the BBC the transaction does not include guarantees against copyright tax disposal of major technology or AI companies.
The Digital Services Tax (a 2% tax that raises around £800 million per year from US tech companies) was previously said to be part of the trade debate.
However, Ms. Kendall said today they agreed today that they were “not part of the partnership.”
She also said there is no guarantee for AI companies on copyright, a major issue in the UK's creative sector.
Meanwhile, many other tech companies have pledged to invest billions of pounds along with Microsoft and Nvidia.
Google has pledged £5 billion for AI research and infrastructure over the next two years.
Tech leaders, including Nadella, fans and Open boss Sam Altman, will accompany Trump to a state banquet hosted by the Windsor Castle royal family on Wednesday night.
AI growth zone in northeastern England
The government also said that northeast England has “potentially more than 5,000 jobs and billions of private investment.” This is designated as the new “AI Growth Zone.”
Openai, Nvidia, Nscale and Semiconductor Company ARM have announced a data center project called Northumberland's Cobalt Park – Stargate UK.
However, the UK version is much smaller than Openai's US-based Stargate project, which was launched in January and has pledged to build a new AI infrastructure of $500 million (£367 billion) over the next four years.
The Tony Blair Institute described the news as a “groundbreaking moment,” but added that the UK has something to do.
Dr. Keegan McBride, an institute's emerging technology and geopolitics expert, said it includes “reform rules for planning, providing clean energy projects, and building the digital infrastructure needed for growth.”
The Conservative Party highlighted that other large international companies, such as pharmaceutical giant Merck, have recently cancelled or delayed plans for the UK's expansion.
