Swedish ecodatacenter locks for 600 million euros to expand AI-ready low-carbon data centers – TFN

Digitalization is changing lives and driving global business growth, but it relies on one important foundation: data centers. As demand for AI and cloud services rises, so does the environmental impact. Ecodatacenter aims to change that by building sustainable, high-performance facilities powered by renewable energy. It sets new standards for responsible digital infrastructure with an emphasis on reducing emissions and supporting the local community.

The Swedish operator has secured €600 million in debt funding from Deutsche Bank's private credit and infrastructure. Fresh Capital will fund the expansion of Falun and Borlage flagship campuses aimed at meeting the burgeoning demand for AI and cloud computing capabilities. This will strengthen its position as a major Scandinavian and European digital infrastructure player.

A big bet on AI growth

Founded in 2014 and led by CEO Peter Michelson, Eecodatacenter designs and operates high-performance facilities optimized for computationally intensive workloads. Unlike many of its rivals, it combines a technical scale with a low carbon footprint. This attracted global clients such as BMW, Deepl, and AI Hyperscaler CoreWeave.

The new funding follows a series of moves highlighting the company's growth trajectory. In 2024, Ecodatacenter partnered with CoreWeave to develop one of Europe's largest AI and HPC clusters at Falun. The company has launched the Falun campus in phases before 2019, expanding significantly since that day, and then focused the facility on its computing power.

It also acquired the former Kvarnshenn Paper Mill in Borlange in 2022, reusing the industrial land for a large future data center hub.

Along with the majority owner areim, the Ecodata Centre has raised about 1.8 billion euros since 2023, a mix of equity and debt financing. The scale of investment reflects capital-intensive competition to build AI-Ready infrastructure across Europe, where sensitivities and corporate demand are accelerating.

Sustainability as a differentiator

The rapid rise in generated AI is highlighting the energy intensity of data centers. Ecodatacenter addresses this challenge head-on, designing facilities to operate renewable energy and incorporating efficient cooling technology. By reusing industrial sites like Kvarnsveden, the company is linking digital expansion to local economic renewals.

The strategy positions it as one of the few European players who can compete with global operators. For investors, the combination of size, sustainability and proven client demand gives them the presence of an increasingly crowded market.

With new capital secured, the company doubles its Swedish campus and solidifies its role in strengthening the power of Europe's AI economy.
