Westport, Connecticut – A study has begun in Westport on the value and feasibility of various artificial intelligence tools in the classroom.
Last year, Westport Public Schools partnered with the state Department of Education on a pilot program on the use of AI in classrooms involving teachers and students at Bedford Middle School and Staples High School.
Currently, the Connecticut Educational Research Center aims to assess specific aspects of student and teacher experiences with classroom AI tools during pilot programs.
The survey will be conducted the week of September 22nd and will be conducted online through links provided by the state education department.
“The investigation should take about 15 minutes to complete,” Dr. Anna Mahon, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, and Dr. Natalie Carignan, director of technology, said in a joint statement. “The survey is anonymous. Students will direct their research and experience with specific AI tools before participating in the survey.”
According to Mahon and Carrignan, the survey is consistent with the Westport Public Schools Board of Education Policy, but participation is voluntary and parents can opt out if they wish.
“If children do not want to participate in this survey, they will not be affected negatively,” Mahon and Kalygnan said. “There's also the option for the child to complete the paper and pencil version of the survey.”
