On Friday, Roblox announced that it would launch a new social video app and a new AI tool for Roblox Creators.
The popular online gaming platform shared these announcements at the Roblox Developers Conference.
Roblox Gaming Clips and other short format Brainrot videos often go viral on vertical video platforms such as Tiktok and Reels. But in Tiktok they still have to compete with dance videos, political talk heads, virus AI slops.
Input: Roblox Moments, a short form video feed like Tiktok for Roblox players to see and share in-game moments.
The announcement of Roblox, in particular its new social features, will likely be scrutinized. Last month, Roblox endured a wave of headlines about a lawsuit against the company over allegedly lacking child safety features.
Roblox's moment
The app, which will be released in beta for users over the age of 13, works just like a Tiktok feed, allowing users to scroll through the virus's Roblox gameplay moments. Users can clip and edit their own moments up to 30 seconds long and share with their own feeds that they can view.
In a Roblox Moments' Roblox Moments' own press release, the company cited a YouTube announcement since last month about how Roblox-related content has gained “over 1 trillion video views” on Google-owned video platforms.
Obviously, Roblox itself wants some of its action, launching its own video platform for gamers to share gameplay videos.
In addition to editing and trimming gameplay clips, users can add music and text descriptions to their videos, just as they can with Tiktok and YouTube shorts.
Also, since this is a developer conference, Roblox announced that it is planning to release the API for Roblox Moments.
AI tools for creators
The Roblox moment wasn't the only big announcement at the meeting. New AI tools for creators will soon be entering Roblox.
For example, creators can enter prompts for a particular vehicle or weapon they wish to use in-game characters. Roblox's AI tools generate interactive cars based on prompts, allowing its characters to drive in a virtual world. These functional works are important upgrades from static 3D objects that creators have already generated in-game
Roblox also deploys a new real-time AI-powered voice chat translation tool that makes it easier for English, Spanish, French and German to interact and socialize.
Additionally, the company has announced other AI-powered tools, from new texts for creators to speech and speech-to-text APIs. The Text-to-Speech API allows creators to integrate AI-powered audio narration and in-game character dialogue with at least 10 audio presets. The Speech-to-Text API allows users to control characters in-game with vocal commands.
