This summer's style is anti-capitalist chic, brought to you by Shane. According to the BBC, the retailer is now investigating the image of Luigi Mangione, a man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has become the face of the model.
The image of Mangion, a smiley and looking ready for a day on the beach with a floral print shirt, has appeared on the website of the First Fashion Giants over the past week, and has caught the eye of shoppers. The BBC runs the images via a facial recognition tool and finds there is a 99.9% match with the Mangion image, but it is not clear that this publication is either AI-generated or made using a manual photo editing tool. But why do you experience all Photoshop troubles these days? Anyway, the images have since been deleted but have been documented via an internet archive. Sheen said he would begin an investigation into how this happened.
“The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery, the company told the BBC. “There are strict standards on every list on our platform.” The company also plans to step up its monitoring process and “plans to take appropriate action with vendors in line with the policy.”
Shein didn't name the vendor in question, but 404 Media reported that shirts are being sold by a brand called Manfinity, with a very sensible product description of “Men's New Spring/Summer Summer Siditsy Floral White Shirt, Pastoral Style Gentleman Shirt, Averyday Wear, Family Matching Mommy and Me (three pieces sold separately). Manfinity appears to regularly use AI-generated models for every 404 media. This discovered a generic gym brother who sells t-shirts and gym outfits. The report also discovered many AI models used by other brands selling at Shane. Fast fashion companies are also the subject of lawsuits that claim they have slashed out their work from artists' online and sold products that directly copy Creative Works.
Using mangoin portraits to sell products is undoubtedly not limited to Shein. He became something of a folk hero of his alleged crime. The merchandise, featuring his image and a message of support for him, launched flood platforms like Etsy shortly after his arrest, with sellers donating a portion of the sale to his legal defense efforts. It is unlikely that funds from Shane sales will go to Mangoin. Rather, he simply uses his recognizable face to draw attention. If so, the mission has been completed.
