Baltimore launches first public AI youth lab in East Baltimore
The city officially launched a new computer lab designed to cut ribbons outside the Green Mount Recreation Center on Greenmount Avenue on Thursday and bring cutting edge technology to East Baltimore.
“We are extremely proud that Greenmount is now home to the world's first AI computer lab for public use here and in East Baltimore,” Mayor Brandon Scott said.
The Computer Lab is characterized by access to the latest AI technologies and was created to teach the community about artificial intelligence and its various applications.
“This lab is equipped with the best technology that residents use. More importantly, you can learn how to use this lab responsibly and access programming and classes to help AI and I learn how to use responsible methods,” Scott said.
The opening event included AI to encourage the launch and 101 of a series of classes focused on AI ethics.
District 12 Councillor Jermaine Jones said it is important to select a city for a community like the AI Lab's Greenmount.
“We're ahead of the curve. This is how investment looks like. It's not about giving kids minimal and what they need, it's a little extra, a little extra they want, and that's what I'm most proud of today,” Jones said.
Jones said the lab demonstrates the city's commitment to showing the importance of equal opportunities for people in underserved communities.
“Unlike other cities in the country, we still value and prioritize equity, so we bring resources to the communities that need them the most,” said Kenya Asli, director of broadband and digital equity.
“This is your space for AI labs. Imagine using it to learn, building with it and using it to build with it,” said Andrew Gilman, NWN's chief marketing officer.
Authorities said additional programs and AI accreditation classes will begin in September.
