Google's Gemini app is getting a powerful new boost. The “Nano Banana” image editing model offers advanced AI image editing capabilities that make people (and pets) look like themselves, even if you change the style, background, or settings completely.
This update integrates the new DeepMind model, which has already achieved the top mark in early testing as it is rolled out today with both free and paid users. Users can preview the living room with new coloured paint, drop themselves and their pets into fun scenes, or see their future self.
These modern tools give users more control over the vibrant images and the stories they tell in each photo.
Edit to keep “You” consistent
One of the biggest challenges in AI photo editing is maintaining your portrait. Small contradictions are added to make the image feel “off.” Google says the upgrade is focused on keeping people's identity and focusing on keeping functionality consistent throughout the editing. This means that users can make their images more enjoyable without sacrificing “selfies.” For example, users can try new haircuts, give pets ridiculous clothes, or exchange clothes without losing details that can't recognize the images.
Gemini supports uploading multiple photos, so you can combine them. For example, blend cat shots and selfies to generate new portraits of both on a road trip.
Multi-turn editing and style mixing
Users can make incremental changes to the same photo. Start with an empty room and add paint until the wall wallpaper, furniture, decoration and paint is complete. Gemini allows for “multi-turn editing.” This means you're adjusting certain parts of the image, leaving everything else intact.
It also has a new design mixing feature that allows you to apply the style of one image to another to an object. Think of a flower petal texture in a rain boot, or a dress that imitates a butterfly wing.
Today's Global Rollout
Both free and premium gemini users around the world can begin experimenting with these new tools. All generated images contain visible watermarks and Google's SynthID digital watermarks, marking them as AI-Made.
With this update, Gemini is raising the bar on how consistent and flexible the editing is possible with AI.
