Truth Social, a social media platform backed by President Donald Trump, has launched a new artificial intelligence-driven search engine called Truth Search AI as part of its latest effort to challenge Big Tech's dominance, particularly Google's advantage. The tool's beta was released on Wednesday, and Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) announced it is partnering with San Francisco-based Prperxity, an AI startup that offers an “answer engine” rather than a traditional search platform. “Perplexity-powered software and AI companies dedicated to providing direct, contextually accurate answers with transparent citations, Truth Search AI aims to enhance the true social platform and increase the amount of information available to users exponentially.
This feature is currently available in the web version of Truth Social and has plans to expand to iOS and Android apps soon.
The launch reflects the broader trends in social media platforms employing AI, such as Elon Musk's Grok Chatbot for X's, and AI assistants for Instagram and AI assistants for WhatsApp, but Truth Search AI is drawing attention to the political context surrounding its development.
Meanwhile, National, a state-owned outlet in the UAE, notes that the answers generated by the tool frequently rely on conservative media such as Fox News and the Epoch Times. However, testing with 404Media suggests that the tool is not entirely one-sided. In response to questions about the US economy and the tariffs of the Trump era, AI reportedly provided an incredibly important response, citing the economic slowdown and the negative effects of tariffs. Axios reported that the confusing version that Truth Social Pull uses from a narrower set of sources compared to the published version of Perplexity reported. A Perplexity spokesperson confirmed that Truth Social is using the Sonar API. This is a developer tool that allows for customizations including source restrictions.
Confusion refused to disclose the financial terms of the transaction, but the company, like its other clients, has made it clear that a true society has full control over how the tools are set up. The SONAR API, launched earlier this year, includes features specifically designed to allow clients to filter or prioritize sources, according to the company.
This partnership comes as AI plays a growing role in US policy and technological development. President Trump issued an executive order earlier this year to remove barriers to American AI leadership, with AI becoming a priority in his administration. Confusion, on the other hand, has attracted criticism of data practices. The BBC, Forbes, and Dow Jones all accused them of copying or reissuing material without permission. The confusion denies the allegations, claiming it stems from a fundamental misconception about how AI and the Internet work.
