Broadcom launches Jericho Chip to advance the AI data center network

[SAN FRANCISCO] Broadcom's Silicon Division launched its next-generation Jericho Networking Chip on Monday (August 4th). It is designed to connect Speed Artificial Intelligence (AI) calculations with data centers over 96.5 km.

The company's Jericho4 introduces and improves several features that increase the amount of networking traffic across a large network operating inside and between data centers.

Building and deployment of AI will become more computationally intensive and need to connect thousands of graphics processors (GPUs). Cloud computing companies such as Microsoft and Amazon need faster, more sophisticated networking chips to move data efficiently.

Security when transferring data across the physical barriers of a security data center is extremely important for cloud companies as there are potential attacks that allow them to intercept it before reaching their destination.

According to Ram Velaga, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Core Switching Group, Broadcom's engineers design Jericho chips for large scale deployments, allowing one system to contain around 4,500 chips.

To mitigate network congestion issues, the Jericho4 chip uses the same high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used by designers such as NVIDIA and AMD for their AI processors. It is necessary for the amount of data that needs to be packed into memory at any instant of the operation.

“The switch actually holds that traffic (in memory) until the crowds are released,” Veraga said. “That means you need to have a lot of memory on the chip.”

The longer the data travels from the chip to the destination, the more memory designers must be included in the chip.

In addition to improving performance, Jericho4 enhances security by encrypting data.

Broadcom has chosen to use three nanometer processes from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for Jericho4. Reuters
