Report: The majority of Australian companies are misusing AI seriously

While Australian companies have no defined AI strategies, AI ambitions far outweigh implementation.

The new report sheds light on the ingestion of Generated AI (Genai) between Australian businesses, and the outlook is disastrous.

According to EXL AI Readiness Report 2025Only a third of companies define AI strategies that guide technology ingestion, while only 16% describe in-house AI as fully integrated into their business workflow.

Similarly, only 39% of companies are using AI to improve customer experience and internal operations.

In fact, only 6% of Australian organizations actively implement generation AI.

“The main reason most companies don't get Genai correctly is that they don't have a data foundation to support it. Even the data is clean, connected, meaningful, and even the smartest models don't offer. It adds a shortage of people who understand both AI and business.

“There's a big disconnect between ambition and execution. That's not surprising. We see it every day. Australian companies know that AI is important, but most are still in the early stages or planning stages when it comes to data strategy, recruitment and capabilities. The appetite is there, but delivery is delayed.

The report found a lack of trust in the technology, based on a survey of 180 experts across Australia. Less than 30% of those surveyed were confident in the accuracy of AI-driven insights.

While only 48% of Australian companies implement a formal data strategy, 35% say data management is a top priority for organizations, and 66% say they identify the company as data-driven.

“To get off track, businesses need to revise their data, build the right teams and incorporate AI into how they run their businesses. They need to move beyond pilots and one-off projects,” Madhan said.

“This is integrating AI into the operational model.”
