Google On Friday, the company announced its agreement to launch Varun Mohan, co-founder and CEO of AI Intelligence, who will be performing the latest AI Talent Wars splash and co-founder and CEO of Startup Windsurf.
As part of the transaction, Google will also hire other senior Windsurf research and development employees. Although Google has not invested in Windsurf, the search giant will get a non-existent license for certain Windsurf technology, according to anyone familiar with the issue. Windsurf allows you to license the technology to others freely.
“We welcome the talent in top AI coding from Windsurf teams to Google Deepmind and work on agent coding,” a Google spokesperson wrote in an email. “We are excited to bring the benefits of Gemini to software developers everywhere.”
The agreement between Google and Windsurf comes after the AI coding startup consulted with Openai on a $3 billion acquisition agreement, CNBC reported in April. Openai did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
The move has expanded the talent war on AI, particularly among well-known companies. Meta Over the past few weeks, we have been offering favorable job openings for multiple Openai employees. Most notably, Facebook parents added Scale founder Alexandr Wang to lead the AI strategy as part of his $14.3 billion investment in startups.
Another Windsurf co-founder, Douglas Chen, will be joining Jeff Wang, the startup's new interim CEO and head of it for the past two years, Jeff Wang, who writes in X's post.
“Most of Windsurf's world-class teams will continue to build Windsurf products with the goal of maximizing their impact in the enterprise,” Wang writes.
Windsurf has become more popular this year as a so-called Vibe coding option. This is the process of using new AI tools to write code. Developers and non-developers embraced the concept, increasing revenue from Windsurf and competitors such as Cursor, which Openai considered purchasing. All interest has led investors to assign a higher rating to startups.
