This week, South Africans received the opportunity to check out Veo 3, Google's most advanced AI video generator. Vio3 features software that generates video clips with AI added to the VIDS app that can be accessed through your Gmail account. The model was first revealed at Google's I/O Conference in May 2025.
South Africans can now generate short video clips using Google's VEO 2 and VEO 3 AI models. You can link this to create a video. VEO 3 was deployed to Google users around the world on Thursday, struggling more than 159 countries at the same time.
Unfortunately, VEO 2 is free to use, but the very good new VEO 3 is currently only in preview mode, and users must subscribe to Google's AI Pro plan to generate several or more clips per day. These can only be longer than 8 seconds per clip, so using VEO 3 will require more time to generate.
Veo 2 can generate clips faster, but that generation is less impressive unless it is not as advanced as the newer models and uses more concise prompts. It is also not a high quality generator.
Like previous generation AI systems released by Google, there are no specific restrictions. Ars Technica reported that following the global launch of Veo 3, a “flood” of racist generators quickly followed on social media like Tiktok.
While most videos show racist stereotypes in which black people are portrayed as criminals or eating watermelons, other videos also target immigrant groups and Jews. The video usually lasts around 8 seconds and contains a VEO watermark, making it easy to identify the source.
This was further concern due to the impressive generation capabilities of the new VEO 3 models.
Last year, Google faced roughly the same problem when launching AI Image Generator.
