Meta's Oakley AI Glasses start at $399 with 3K video recording, battery life length and IPX4 water resistance

AI Video & Visuals

What I'm looking forward to: A few weeks after updating the Ray-Ban smart glasses with real-time translation and other AI-powered features, Meta will be collaborating with Oakley to unveil a new pair, offering camera capabilities and additional upgrades. Pre-orders begin on July 11th, with standard models available starting at $399 and limited edition versions available for $499.

The new Oakley Meta HSTN (pronounced How-Stuhn) smart glasses combine Meta's AI and smart glass technology with Oakley's HSTN style frame. Compared to Meta's Ray-Ban Story model, HSTN glasses support video recording at 3K resolution, offer up to 8 hours of battery life and introduce IPX4 water resistance.

Oakley claims that glasses last up to 8 hours in typical use and up to 19 hours in standby. The included charging case offers up to 48 hours of battery life and can charge your glasses to 50% capacity in just 20 minutes.

However, Meta and Oakley are primarily promoting HSTN glasses by introducing features they share with the $299 Ray-Ban model. These include a 12MP camera that captures photos and videos while pressing the button, and built-in speakers for playing music from various streaming services.

The heading function is the meta AI integration that was introduced last month at Ray-BanGlass. Like these, Oakley Grass supports AI assistants with real-time translation, music playback controls and visual processing capabilities.

Visual processing allows meta-AI to respond to natural language commands based on what the user sees. It is designed for tasks such as translating signs and providing cooking advice. A recent clip from Oakley shows golfer JR Smith receiving instantaneous wind speed and directional information from his digital assistant. Meta has also announced support for sending text, audio, video and photos to contacts via Instagram.

Real-time translations are currently available in English, French, Italian and Spanish. Language packs can be downloaded and made available offline.

Oakley will be showcasing glasses at Fanatics Fest June 20th-22nd, UFC International Fight Week June 25th-27th, and other sporting events later this year.

It is expected to start this summer in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. Meta HSTN glasses will also be released in Mexico, India and the United Arab Emirates in 2025.

Available styles include:

  • Prizm Ruby lenses and warm grey
  • Prism polar black lens black

Think about buying smart glasses over the next two years?
