[PARIS] Mistral launched Europe's first AI inference model on Tuesday. This uses logical thinking to create responses. This is trying to keep pace with its US and Chinese rivals at the forefront of AI development.
The French startup has defended its European roots, won the support of French President Emmanuel Macron, and attempted to differentiate it by making some of its models open source, in contrast to the Google proprietary offerings of Openai or Alphabet.
Mistral is considered the best shot in Europe by having a homemade AI competitor, but it has lagged behind in terms of market share and revenue.
Inference models use chain of technological techniques – the process of generating answers with intermediate inference abilities when solving complex problems.
It could also be a promising path to advance AI capabilities as the traditional approach of building large-scale language models as adding more data and computing power begins to reach limits.
For Mistral, valued at US$6.2 billion by venture capitalists, an industry shift away from “scaling” could give a window into catching up to better Capital Sdad rivals.

China's Deepseek broke through in January as a viable competitor through low-cost, open-source AI models for inference.
Openai first launched its inference model last year, followed by Google a few months later. Meta, which also offers open source models, says that the latest top shelf models have inference capabilities, but has not yet released standalone inference models.
Mistral is launching an open source Magistral Small Model and a more powerful version called Magistral Medium for business customers.

“The best human thoughts are not linear — they interweave logic, insights, uncertainty and discovery. The reasoning language model allowed us to rely and delegate complex thinking and deep understanding on AI,” Mistral said.
American companies have mostly maintained ownership of cutting-edge models, but a handful of others, such as Meta, have released open source models. In contrast, Chinese companies from Deepseek to Alibaba are heading the open source path to demonstrate their technical capabilities.
Mistral Small can be downloaded by hugging Face's platform and inferred in languages including English, French, Spanish, Arabic and simplified Chinese. Reuters
