New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has made a strong call for promoting responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI). Chairing a workshop at the 68th Parliamentary Association (CPA) Conference in Barbados, Birla said systems such as AI-based translation, AI-enabled electronic libraries and speech-to-text reports are making parliamentary processes more efficient and inclusive. Speaking at a workshop on “Harnessing Technology: Strengthening Democracy and Tackling the Digital Divide through Digital Transformation'', Birla said that through collaboration and knowledge sharing, we can ensure that technology becomes a bridge rather than a barrier. “Commonwealth countries should use technology to bridge the digital divide, while promoting the responsible and ethical use of AI,” he said.Highlighting technological advances, Mr. Birla said the application of e-parliament has brought about a major change in the functioning of India's parliamentary democracy. Talking about future digital initiatives, he said that in the near future, real-time AI translation systems such as 'Sansad Basini' will enable all MPs to communicate in their mother tongue, which will be another achievement for democracy in a diverse country like India. He said Prime Minister Modi has adopted a “visionary approach” that sees AI not just as a technological advancement but as a powerful tool for citizen empowerment and transparent governance. TNN
