Yesterday (April 4), Turnitin announced the AI Writing Detector Capabilities (AIWDC) tool it developed to identify if students are using AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and GPT3.
Unfortunately, they were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation of how the tool works or how the quoted accuracy levels were calculated. I have not been given the chance to understand reliability.
The timing of this release at the start of the evaluation period is particularly problematic, coupled with the lack of detail regarding accuracy measurements and tool behavior, combined with the lack of sufficient information to reliably evaluate the tool and prepare or evaluate appropriate guidance and training. there is no time. policy impact.
We, along with the majority of UK universities, have decided to opt out of the initial release of our detection tools. Opting out of the initial release of this tool now will prevent us from enabling this feature in the future, but it will give us time to test the technology and fully consider the impact on our staff and students.
