SoftBank is making a big bet on semiconductors in the AI era.

The investment holding company is investing $2 billion in Intel common stock, the company announced Monday. Under the agreement, SoftBank will pay $23 per share.

“This strategic investment reflects our belief that advanced semiconductor manufacturing and supply is expanding further in the US and Intel plays a key role,” SoftBank Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son said in a statement.

In a statement, Intel said Softbank's investments are “based on a long-term vision to enable an AI revolution.”

Intel and SoftBank did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

SoftBank has invested heavily in AI and has established itself as a leading supporter of Openai.

Intel, a producer of semiconductors or chips essential to power AI, saw a surge in stock on Friday after Bloomberg reported that the US government was considering taking stock in the company.

Earlier last week, President Donald Trump praised Inter CEO Rip Bou Tan after he previously criticized him and called for him to resign.

SoftBank shares fell sharply after winning the opening on Tuesday. They were trading 4.4% lower at 10am local time in Tokyo.

Intel shares were trading after opening hours on Monday.
