The new battle to build the best large-scale language models for business applications in artificial intelligence continues to intensify.
Snowflake announced Snowflake Arctic on Wednesday. This is his 480 billion parameter open source large-scale language model, which the cloud-based data warehousing company claims is the best choice for enterprise AI applications. The company said Arctic is “optimized for complex enterprise workloads.” Unlike OpenAI's ChatGPT, Alphabet's Gemini, and Meta, there is no consumer-facing chatbot version of Arctic.

“This is a transformational moment for Snowflake, as our AI research team is innovating at the forefront of AI,” Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy said in a statement. “By delivering industry-leading intelligence and efficiency to the AI community in a truly open way, we are pushing the frontiers of what open source AI can do.”
Snowflake says it completed its Arctic training in less than three months on a budget of less than $2 million, eight times less than similar models.
“This means Arctic outperforms other open source models trained on similar computational budgets,” the company said in a blog post. “More importantly, it excels in enterprise intelligence, even when compared to companies trained with significantly higher computing budgets.”

In the same post, Snowflake suggested that Arctic offers competitive performance with other models, including DBRX, a recently introduced model from rival Databricks, Llama 3, and some versions of the open source model Mixtral. provided the data to do so.
Snowflake stock rose 1.1% to $152.85 on Wednesday.
