SIU lecture focused on the rise and benefits of AI
Carbondale, Illinois — Next week’s lecture at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale will highlight the rise of generative artificial intelligence and its interdisciplinary importance in the social sciences and humanities, along with its impact on everyday life.
Ajit Jaokar and Ayse Mutlu, faculty members at the University of Oxford, UK present “The New World of Artificial Intelligence at the Center of Virtual Expression”. Part of the Liberal Arts Speakers Series, this lecture will be held on Monday, April 10, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the John C. Guyon His Auditorium at the Morris Library. Lectures are free and open to the public.
The lecture also addressed and dispelled some of the positive and negative hype surrounding the AI phenomenon with Pinkney Benedict, Professor of the School of Literature, Writing and Digital Humanities and Director and Founder of the Digital Xpression Lab. ) said.
Importance of AI
Lecture attendees will “deepen our understanding of the potential of generative AI such as Dall-E, MidJourney and ChatGPT, their undeniable impact on society, and appreciate the inherently interdisciplinary nature of these technologies.” I hope you will. Benedict said.
Generative AI can generate text, images, or other media in response to prompts.
“In the right context, they can improve work productivity, artistic output, and quality of life. I was.
Benedict added that AI-powered technology is “quickly becoming an integral part of many careers.”
“Fortunately, you don’t have to be a computer science expert to participate in how these technologies are changing the game for artists, academics, and anyone interested in the future of work.” He said. “One of the areas where he has been getting a lot of attention is no-code innovation. With AI-powered no-code tools, anyone can create sophisticated applications and applications without him having to write a single line of code. Software he can create and deploy his solutions.”
New initiatives planned at SIU
Jaokar and Mutlu share their experience in founding the AI Center of Excellence. Their experience may lay the foundation for their education and future opportunities within liberal arts colleges.
The university is launching an initiative to create an SIU Center for Virtual Expressions, with a goal of opening in the fall of 2023, said Jodi Murray, dean of the university. The center’s focus is to provide non-technical students at SIU Carbondale with access to “the cutting edge generative his technology to enhance their productivity, expand their reach, and enable 21st century artists to develop themselves.” It’s about being able to keep pace with how you express yourself,” Benedict said.
The center will also benefit faculty in several ways, he added.
“Having hands-on access to cutting-edge generative technologies will enable faculty to explore new approaches to teaching, research and creative work that life in a modern research institution demands,” he said. Told. “They can also collaborate with colleagues across disciplines, engage with students, and experiment with new tools and techniques to explore complex topics. , provides an opportunity to stay on top of the latest developments in the field and helps keep their work ahead of the curve on and off campus.”
