An app that advertised the ability to use AI to turn regular images into nudes has reportedly been removed from the iPhone App Store.
However, Apple had to be notified of its existence.
Apple won't allow non-consensual AI nude apps on App Store
2024 is shaping up to be a great year for artificial intelligence. It's included in Google search results, it's included in most Microsoft products, Samsung is building it into its latest high-end phones, and Apple CEO Tim Cook has big AI-related announcements coming soon. He promised to do so (probably at WWDC24 in June).
However, the company was recently reminded that there are just as many bad things about this technology as there are good things. 404 Media It was reported on Friday that:
“Apple has removed many AI image generation apps from the App Store. 404 Media We have discovered that these apps advertise their ability to create non-consensual nude images. This is a sign that app store operators are starting to take more action against these types of apps. ”
The removed application apparently allowed users to upload a photo of a clothed person and the AI would convert the image into a nude image.
404 Media The company says it reported three such applications to Apple, and all of them were subsequently kicked out of the App Store.
Perhaps these are in violation of the App Store guidelines, which state that “apps should not contain content that is offensive, insensitive, upsetting, intended to hate, or in grossly bad taste.” contains “overtly sexual or pornographic material”.
It's hard to imagine that Apple needed a reminder that artificial intelligence has a downside. The problems are getting at least as much attention as the benefits. Still, it's something to keep in mind as developers work on new AI features like iOS 18 and macOS 15.
