At Microsoft Build 2024, the company made a number of artificial intelligence (AI)-focused announcements across Copilot, Azure cloud services, its data analytics platform Microsoft Fabric, and various other platforms. The event's keynote came just one day after the Surface event, where it unveiled the Copilot+ PC class and a range of integrated AI capabilities for PCs. Now, expanding on Azure, the tech giant has made the recently announced GPT-4o generally available through Azure OpenAI services.
GPT-4o now available via Azure
Microsoft's cloud computing platform Azure, which already offers a wide selection of large language models (LLMs), has continued its partnership with OpenAI to add support for GPT-4o. The recently announced AI model can be accessed through the Azure OpenAI service by anyone with an existing subscription to the cloud computing platform. The tech giant is integrating GPT-4o's capabilities (emotional expressions, real-time language responses, and computer vision) into Copilot.
A short demo shared by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during the keynote session showcased Copilot assisting a user as they played the game Minecraft. The AI chatbot was able to assist in real-time by answering questions and suggesting actions. At the same time, the company shared various ways developers can use the capabilities of the AI model to build their own tools.
Building Copilot with Copilot Studio
AI agents, or mini chatbots, have become a new trend in the tech space recently. OpenAI was one of the first to introduce GPT, a chatbot that can perform specific tasks, built by providing text prompts to ChatGPT. Following this, Google also announced Gems at its I/O 2024 event last week. Now, Microsoft is enabling businesses and developers to build Copilot apps through a new platform called Copilot Studio.
The most interesting thing about the Copilot AI agent is that it can function automatically based on instructions given to it. This means you don't have to type a command to initiate an action. You can set it up to monitor your emails and complete data entry tasks. Like other AI agents, you can also build them using simple text prompts in Copilot Studio. The platform is currently in preview with limited access, but will be generally available soon.
