Mark Zuckerberg has told the world in October 2021 that Facebook will rebrand itself to Meta as it moves forward towards the Metaverse.

Meta’s top executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, chief product officer Chris Cox, and chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth, said in an interview Bosworth gave to Nikkei Asia on Wednesday. , spends most of its time on artificial intelligence.

Bosworth said some of that effort will benefit the Metaverse, the digital world the company says it is working to build, but other big tech companies like Microsoft and Alphabet are also doing the same. It shows how important AI is to the metaverse as it invests in the space.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, announced a product group focused on generative AI in February. Generative AI is a new set of machine learning techniques that allow computers to generate text, draw pictures, and create other media that mimic human output. Meta has its own big language model called LLaMa and announced it will be released to researchers in February. LLaMa, like competing AI models, can answer questions and summarize documents.

Large language models power applications such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing AI, and Google’s Bard.

Meta’s Reality Labs division, overseen by Bosworth and home to the company’s metaverse technology and projects, posted a loss of $13.72 billion in 2022. But digital advertising makes up the majority of Meta’s revenue. The company reported he will earn $116.61 billion in 2022.

Bosworth told Nikkei that the company plans to unveil several commercial applications of AI this year that could help its profitable advertising business.

For example, companies can use AI to create ads by generating multiple images suitable for different audiences instead of relying on a single image ad campaign, he said.

Still, Bosworth told Nikkei that Meta could use AI in the Metaverse as well.

“In the future, we may be able to simply describe the world we want to create and have a large-scale language model generate that world,” Bosworth said in the report. “So more people have access to things like content creation.”

According to reports, the company hopes to eventually apply AI technology to all its services and products, including both Facebook and Instagram.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
