The global tech giant has quietly acquired WaveOne, a startup that created artificial intelligence-based video compression software.
Apple has acquired WaveOne, a startup developing artificial intelligence algorithms for video compression.
The company has not formally announced the acquisition, but Bob Stankosh, WaveOne’s former head of sales and business development, revealed the news on LinkedIn.
“After almost two years at WaveOne, we finalized the sale of the company to Apple last week,” he wrote. “We started our journey with WaveOne when we realized that machine learning and deep learning video technology could change the world. We have added our own technology to his portfolio.”
WaveOne has created artificial intelligence based video compression software. The software allocates limited bandwidth to important on-screen elements such as faces, and minimizes resources for less-noticed background elements.
Even small improvements in bandwidth efficiency can have a big impact on how much money streamers spend compressing and delivering video, and also improve the end-user experience.
Google already uses machine learning algorithms to compress YouTube videos, resulting in a 4% reduction in the amount of data required to stream the video.
